And then there was one. A story of grit, determination, and courage, the lonely road of entrepreneurship

On the 12th of August 2023, Connecthub et al, launched the entrepreneurship program, a 10-week journey that brought together a group of enthusiastic learners who embarked on a problem-solving journey, toward entrepreneurship. This program focused on getting learners to identify a problem, come up with practical solutions, and implemented them to solve the problem. Using a framework generously provided by the African Leadership Academy, through the BUILD-IN-A-BOX initiative, learners were able to use the framework to assist them through the ideation process to implementation. The program focused primarily on a journey of what the World Economic Forum refers to as 21st-century skills. (Communication, Critical Thinking, Collaboration & Creativity).

Over the 10 weeks, students were given a series of tasks to complete, as a way to get them closer to the implementation part of their journey. I thought it necessary to reflect on the story of Tshwanelo Mputle (a learner from Lebone II College of the Royal Bafokeng. The story of Tshwanelo (16) reflects true leadership, grit, and determination. During the course of the 10 weeks, Tshwanelo and her group members faced a lot of difficulties navigating the demands of the program, from creating digital archives, to research tasks, executive summaries, vision boards and finally presenting their big project at the ideas festival.

When asked what was the biggest challenge that her group faced, she simply said 'communication', 'we didn't communicate well with each other, and before you knew it, people were not attending meetings and not following up on work that needed to be done.

Amidst the chaos and dwindling motivation, one learner stood out. Rather than succumbing to the challenges, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Recognizing the value of the opportunity and the potential for personal growth, she committed herself to the project with unwavering determination.

Despite the setbacks and the lack of progress within her group, she continued to research, ideate, and refine their project. She exhibited a rare blend of resilience and leadership, taking on multiple roles to compensate for the absence of active participation from her group members.

When the day of the ideas festival arrived, the room was filled with mixed anticipation. Some groups were well-prepared, while others had obviously struggled. In the case of the lone learner, the room's attention shifted as she confidently took the stage and presented despite being the only person from her group who showed up.

As she presented her ideas, it became apparent that her commitment had not waned despite the obstacles. Her thorough research, strategic thinking, and articulate presentation captured the audience's attention. The contrast between her solo effort and the incomplete projects of other groups underscored the magnitude of her accomplishment. When asked about why she didn't take the easy way out, she attributed this moment to her beloved mother, who said to her ' When you start something, it is important that you finish it.' Whether or not it has gone the way you want it'.

In the face of adversity, this lone entrepreneur demonstrated unparalleled courage and resilience. Instead of succumbing to the challenges, she embraced the opportunity for personal and professional growth. Her ability to navigate the difficulties of the entrepreneurship program independently not only showcased her dedication but also highlighted her leadership potential.

The lesson from this inspiring journey is clear: courage and determination can propel an individual to success even in the most challenging circumstances. The lone learner's triumph serves as a reminder that setbacks are an inherent part of any entrepreneurial endeavor, and it is the response to those setbacks that defines true character.

Whilst there was a lot of buzz and excitement about the ideas festival, it was more about the reflection of what students had endured that was the most valuable aspect of the program. ConnectHub is committed to creating a learning environment that will encourage students to engage with real-life challenges whilst thinking deeply about contributing positively to their communities. Through project-based entrepreneurship learning we will be well on our way to preparing our young people for the future.
